Why America Still Picks Fruit by Hand | Danny Bernstein, CEO of Reservoir
Danny Bernstein is the CEO of Reservoir, which runs Reservoir Farms: working commercial farmland in Salinas, California where robotics startups test machines on real crops. He spent close to 20 years in Silicon Valley, including a startup that sold to Google, ten years at Google, and two years at Microsoft, before building a technical community around agriculture instead. In this episode he gives the labor number underneath the whole category. The American Farm Bureau Federation counted over 400,000 advertised H-2A farm positions in 2025 and 182 domestic applicants. He explains why those jobs go unfilled even in rural counties running 9-11% unemployment, and why he calls this AI for resiliency. He walks through the three gaps he wants startups to build into: using physics to replace agricultural chemicals, using machine vision to reduce how much chemical gets applied, and automating the jobs that go unfilled. He explains why fresh produce is the hard case, and why in 2026 we perform precision surgery with robots and still harvest peaches and table grapes by hand. On the farm itself: 40 acres of iceberg, romaine, strawberries, broccoli and cauliflower, laser-leveled, sitting within driving distance of the headquarters of Driscoll's, Taylor Farms and Dole Vegetables. Monterey County filed $4.82 billion in gross agricultural production value for 2025. Reservoir opened Salinas in March 2026 and Sonoma County about a month later, with 15 acres of Pinot grapes. Bonsai Robotics tested the same machine on vineyards and on strawberries in the same week. He is direct about what an ag tech CEO signs up for: a machine that has to return its cost in about two years, a customer who knows their own numbers better than the founder does, service teams or dealer relationships, and a manufacturing pipeline that often runs through firms like Andros Engineering in Paso Robles or GK Machine in Oregon. The last third is the part most robotics coverage skips. Reservoir runs eight interns from Hartnell College, the local community college, placed inside deep tech startups, and is building its Central Valley site on a community college farm at Merced College because a teaching farm carries tree nuts, table grapes, citrus, stone fruit, tomatoes and melons on one property.
