So number one. Don't have a high school resume. Okay, when you finish high school, you then have a college resume. Number two, don't have a college resume, have a young professional resume and you really can graduate from each of those.
💡— This overturns the common assumption that a resume is a static document, emphasizing that it must evolve with your career stage.
So many jobs in real estate are numbers oriented and we're talking to an acquisition professional or an analyst and we don't see any numbers or square footage or values anything like that on the resume.
🤯— Reveals a surprising gap: many candidates fail to quantify their achievements, which is a critical mistake in a numbers-driven industry.
Start early: get internships, a real estate license, and learn financial modeling to stand out.
This week, research and apply for at least one internship or entry-level position in commercial real estate, and sign up for an ARGUS or financial modeling course.
Tailor your resume to the next level, not the previous one, and quantify achievements with numbers.
Review your current resume and replace at least three bullet points with quantified achievements (e.g., 'managed $5M portfolio' instead of 'responsible for portfolio').
Most firms lack effective succession planning, but it's critical as baby boomers retire.
If you're in a leadership role, initiate a conversation with your team about succession plans and identify at least one potential internal successor.
Communication is the biggest failure in life and business; open dialogue is key to succession.
Schedule a one-on-one meeting with your manager or a direct report to discuss career aspirations and development plans.
