In this class you'll be invited to get comfortable in a supported position for a deep exploration of body and mind into relaxation, as well as a somatic-based meditative inquiry for embodied spiritual recognition. NSDR, or non sleep deep rest, was coined by neuroscientist and Stanford professor Andrew Huberman and refers to powerful relaxation practices such as yoga nidra which are designed to take your body and mind into states in between waking and sleeping, in order to provide rejuvenation, rest, and deeper well-being. As part of this class, we will explore the psyche and its layers of emotional and mental conditioning as held in the body, all in the context of a deeply restorative journey into the more subtle aspects of meditation. Kelly Boys is a mindfulness trainer and meditation teacher. She designs and delivers bespoke mindfulness programs for large institutions such as the United Nations Foundation, where she co-developed and worked to deliver a mindfulness and well-being program called “Peace on Purpose” for UN humanitarian and development workers on the front lines. She has delivered programs with UN agencies such as UNICEF and UNDP from New York to the Middle East to Central Asia. The Peace on Purpose program is now being implemented across UN agencies and is being scaled to their global staff, with the support and guidance of the United Nations Foundation. Kelly is the author of The Blind Spot Effect, released in 2018. It has been translated into Spanish and Chinese. The book is an informative and practical guide inviting us to understand: how we get blind spots, how to bring them to light, and how to work with that newfound awareness to improve our lives. She was also Director of the Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute's facilitator training program, launching a program to train trainers from around the world through a yearlong mastery program in the neuroscience-based emotional intelligence and mindfulness program developed at Google. She is the former Director of Operations and teacher trainer for the Integrative Restoration Institute, a teacher training institute for the research-based and trauma-sensitive mindfulness protocol called iRest. Kelly studied the non dual yogic tradition of Kashmir Shaivism and tantra through the Yoga Nidra tradition. She taught a weekly trauma-sensitive mindfulness and yoga program at San Quentin State Prison for incarcerated veterans alongside James Fox of the Prison Yoga Project. Kelly has worked extensively in the field of trauma sensitive mindfulness, teaching meditation to US veterans with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI). She holds a degree in Intercultural Religious Studies and is a certified iRest® meditation teacher, Search Inside Yourself teacher, and is the founding advisor for the meditation app Simple Habit. She teaches retreats and workshops at spots like the Esalen Institute, and her teaching is featured on the Oura Ring as well as the apps Mindfulness.com, Wise at Work, and Simple Habit.

Introduction to using yoga nidra specifically for sleep and relaxation rather than meditative inquiry.
- The instructor frames this session as a departure from typical yoga nidra classes, focusing on rest and sleep rather than spiritual inquiry.
- Yoga nidra for sleep does not require actually falling asleep during the practice; it simply prepares body and mind for deeper rest.
- Trying to force relaxation usually backfires, so the practice invites the body to relax naturally as it would if the mind were truly rested.
- Participants are told to simply listen to guidance without needing to control the breath or exert effort.
Settling in and turning away from the day's activities.
- Practitioners are invited to get comfortable on a floor, couch, or bed with pillows or bolsters as needed.
- The instruction is to intentionally mark an inward turn from the day, letting prior mental and emotional impressions fade into the background.
- There is no agenda to fall asleep; the practice simply prepares the body and mind for rest.
Opening the senses and welcoming breath, body, emotions, and mind state.
- Attention begins with the natural flow of breath in and out, noticed with a gentle quality of attention.
- All senses are allowed to open naturally—sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound—without grasping or controlling anything.
- Emotional tones from the day, whether stress or connection, are welcomed and met with kindness rather than resistance.
- The mental state, whether busy, scattered, or calm, is acknowledged as leftover impressions and welcomed just as it is.
主要な概念
- yoga nidra— The central practice guiding the entire episode, used for deep rest, relaxation, and sleep preparation.
- sleep preparation— The stated purpose of the practice — preparing body and mind for sleep without needing to actually fall asleep.
- relaxation without agenda— A key principle: trying to force relaxation backfires, so the practice invites natural release instead.
注目の名言
We don't do this with a strong agenda because when you try to make yourself relax, it usually backfires.
💡— Overturns the common assumption that relaxation requires effortful striving, revealing that forcing it produces the opposite result.
When you understand that your intention is to allow the body to naturally relax as it would if the mind were truly rested, then you're inviting the body back into a more natural state.
💡— Reframes relaxation as a return to a natural state rather than an achievement, shifting the entire approach to rest.

🧘Relaxation Practice
Trying to force relaxation backfires; the body relaxes naturally when given permission.
This week, set a 10-minute timer and lie down without any goal — just notice what happens when you stop trying to relax.
A body scan with gentle awareness can spontaneously release held tension.
Before bed tonight, slowly move attention from jaw to feet, pausing at each area to invite release.
💭Mindset Shifts
Deep rest is a natural state, not an achievement to be forced.
When you notice yourself trying hard to relax, silently say 'let go of the agenda' and return to the breath.
Letting go of figuring things out and control is itself the path to rest.
Pick one worry this week and practice saying 'I don't need to solve this right now' before sleep.
